Language of Literature (Green Texts)

Please turn to pages R134-135 in your reading text to review the writing pattern of sequence.  Writing partterns follow certain formats and use certain vocabulary.

Independently: Read R134 for directions, information, and questions on reading/writing to understand sequence. Page R135 is the text to read to answer the questions.

After reading, discuss responses in your reading groups.  As a group, decide on a gist statement of what you have learned.  Each person write it on your papers. Turn in.

Directions to students (they know this; we power write almost daily):

1. Write for the time specified.

2. Keep writing. You get credit for the number of different words.

3. IF Stuck: repeat the last word written until new thoughts pop into your head (refer to Step 2)

4. Spelling: circle words you think are misspelled

5. Keep writing --you can switch topics

6. Use public thoughts.

  

Time students for two minutes, then:

  

7. Students stop when signaled to stop.

8. Students immediately count the number of words written.

9. Each student writes the date and number of words at the top of his/her paper.

10. Students record the number of words on the power writing sheet in their folders.
