Student Expectations[1] [2] [3]

Mission:

... to enable a child to become a thinking, caring, productive person using high academic standards in a positive learning environment.

High Academic Standards

Teachers focus lessons on the required Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Grade Level Expectations of Washington State. We include units that involve students in projects to apply their skills. Independent, partner, group, and whole class work and instruction allow students to learn and practice their skills. Practice includes work designed for differing learning styles and needs to help students succeed and meet standards.

Positive Learning Environment

High academic standards provide the foundation for a positive learning environment. When students and teachers focus on learning, a positive environment is enhanced.

Students Focus on Learning

Students who come to school ready to learn understand to listen to their teachers and to focus on the learning. They know the sometimes hidden expectations of a positive learning environment.

Do you know the expectations that learning students know? Please read some of the procedures and actions a learning student applies so that you, too, can be part of a positive learning environment.

What if you are not following the expectations, and therefore are undermining the positive learning environment? Teachers will verbally warn you of the problem.  If the situation continues, your name will be recorded for a follow-up conference. If you continue to act as a non-student, you will be assigned a detention and your family will be notified. Students who are unable to practice, meet, and apply the expectations and goals of a learning student will need to follow a contract, a sample of which is also included on this page. The goal will be to help the student become a learning student who supports the positive learning environment and therefore will join the community of successful learners.

Expectations and Goals

Be Here.

Be at school, in class, on time following procedures.

Be ready at your area (desk) and working at the sound of the bell.

Stay in your area.

Use breaks for bathroom, pencil sharpening, work gathering for the next class, etc.

During class apply Active Listening and Study Skills.

Active Listening Skills means

Eyes on speaker or visual

Ears on speaker (teacher, another student, guest speaker, computer program, etc.)

Mouth is silent unless directed to respond

Hands to self--body in own area (may take notes, but may not fidget, draw, or create off task)

Posture remains straight and alert (sitting or standing as directed)

Study Skills means

Be prepared with sharpened pencils, working pens, paper, class assignments.

Listen to or read directions.  Follow them.  Raise your hand for task information.

Focus on the task only.

Independent work: complete the task on your own in your own area; raise hand for task information

Partner work: complete the task with a partner in your partner area; raise hand for task information

Group work: complete the task with group in your group area; raise hand for task information

Whole class work: actively listen; complete the task; raise hand for task information

Ignore interruptions. Don't let yourself be distracted by non-learners.

Focus on the task until completed. Turn it in with the appropriate heading for your class.

Organize work in files, folders, notebooks, binders, etc. for each class in a way that makes sense.

If your work is completed, independently in your area read, write, or draw with your own supplies.

Be Kind.

Co-operate with those around you.

Be aware of the needs of others.

Think of others before yourself.

Work without disturbing or distracting others.

Share.

Be overly friendly and positive.

Avoid sarcasm.

Include others.

Accept others, working with people you may not like or who may not be your friend.

Be Respectful.

Be quiet and listen.  Follow Active Listening and Study skills.

Follow instructions as given, when given, as intended without comment.

Remember that the following are considered disrespectful:

Commenting negatively after directions

Repeating -- mocking-- teacher words and gestures.

Respect all persons (students, staff, community, family).

Be overly friendly and positive with all persons, not just your friends.

Remember to talk on task.

Use appropriate and public language.  Be aware of what offends others so you do use appropriate and public language.

Accept others, working with people you may not like or who may not be your friend.

Ask permission to use what is not your own.

Be Safe.

Manage yourself at all times.

Keep your own person and belongings in your own space.

Be aware of others' space limits.

Follow school rules.

Take care of personal and school property.

Ask permission to use what is not your own.

Be Productive

Try your hardest to do your best.  That means to stay focused on the assigned task. Keep reading, writing, discussing as assigned to learn the content. Focusing on the learning is key to learning.  Taking time to include detail in your thinking, writing, and reviewing will help you finish the task with a thorough project or answer, instead of simply doing just a limited amount of work. Ask yourself:

What is the task?

What am I supposed to do?

What am I learning?

What would excellent work look like?

Is what I am doing now helping me?

Do I need to re-read? rewrite? revise? check spelling? check facts?

Have I completed the expectations in the BEST way possible?

Follow Active Listening and Study Skills.

Complete and turn in assignments.

Help yourself and others to learn.
